George Walker ‘58 - LaVie Portrait

George E Walker ‘(90) passed away peacefully at home on Saturday. George was born and raised in Somerset, PA. Following high school, he joined the US Army during the time of the Korean War and served overseas in Germany. Upon leaving the military, he attended Penn State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and also met and married his wife of 64 years, Guinevere Bowlby, also from Somerset. Following college, George worked his entire career for Hercules, Aerospace and its successor ATK prior to his retirement. During his career, he became one of the nation's most pre-eminent solid rocket motor technical managers, providing technical leadership on several of the country's most advanced and critical national defense and commercial space programs. His passion for his work was matched by his passion for the outdoors wherein you could always find him in pursuit of the first tram at Snowbird during the winter and waterskiing at sunrise on the reservoirs above SLC in the summer. George was an inspiration and a role model for the following generations in how he lived and loved life. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family, but his indelible spirit will live on within all those who were fortunate enough to be a part of his world. George is survived by his wife Guinevere and children George Walker Jr (Jackie & children), Guinevere Cummings (Kevin, children & grandchildren), Graham Walker, and Gretchen McClain (Mark). In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice in George's memory.
