"Pathway of Brotherhood” Bricks
The first brick was cemented into the cornerstone of Theta Chi in 1856. His name was Frederick Freeman, founder of Theta Chi Fraternity. The second brick was his co-founder and distant cousin Arthur Chase, Alpha 1856.
Arthur Chase was descended from a long line of New Englanders. He was born in Bellows Falls, Vermont. His father was an Episcopal minister who later became the first Bishop of New Hampshire. When young Chase was nine years old, the family moved to Claremont, New Hampshire, and this town remained his home for the balance of his life.
Brother Chase entered Norwich University in 1852 at seventeen years old. Upon graduation in 1855, he returned to Claremont and began the study of law. He attended and graduated with an LL.B from Harvard Law School in 1857. He practiced law in his home town for nine years and then entered the newspaper business, purchasing The National Eagle in 1868. He continued to publish the Claremont weekly newspaper for several years. He served his local community as superintendent of the public schools, and was a staunch Episcopalian. He and his wife, Garafelia Davis, had seven children. Although he died at age 53 in 1888, it is said that "he lived more in one half century than many men do in three-score and ten."
Now you can join us in celebrating the 140th Anniversary of our Fraternity, by contributing a brick to the "Pathway of Brotherhood." The fraternity's public foundation plans to dedicate a garden and walkway, replete with red and white carnations in front of the new International Headquarters in Indianapolis on April 10, 1996. Every living Theta Chi will be invited to join us for the event: our 140th Anniversary Founders Day. But even if you can't attend, you can be represented by the gift of your personalized brick. Add your name to the list of brothers who have contributed to the Pathway:
