Theta Chi Strive To Develop Young Philanthropy

Thirty-five teams clamored to identify pictures drawn on an easel. Thirty-two teams vied for control of a small black-and-white ball. What did all of those teams have in common? They were all participating in two of the greek community's newest philanthropies, Zeta Greek Draw and Theta Chi KICKS.

In its third year, Zeta Tau Alpha's takeoff on the game show "Win, Lose or Draw" raised over $1,000 for the Association for Retarded Citizens. Teams of three sorority or fraternity members tried each other's wits during the round-robin tournament.

“Now that the tournament has been established, it's a lot easier to operate," commented Co-Chair Melissa O'Rourke, a senior.

The second annual Theta Chi KICKS soccer tournament benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The two-day event raised approximately $3,300 to help children with life-threatening diseases fulfill their dreams. KICKS Chairperson Jim Gavula, a senior, noted that having a framework established led to increased participation by both independent and greek teams.

Zeta Tau Alpha received the Crown Chapter Award for overall chapter excellence, as well as national recognition for its pledge program.

Locally, the sorority won the spirit award in Dance Marathon, as well as volleyball and spirit in Lambda Chi's September Summer.

Theta Chi was very proud of its accomplishments in Dance Marathon: the group raised $18,000, earning the award for the Most Improved Chapter, and had two brothers Dennis Foley and Chris Heidrick—appointed to the Overall Committee for 'Thon '91.
