Dance Marathon Collects $28,000 - CDT Story
Of the 62 couples entered in the Fifth Annual Interfraternity Council Dance Marathon at the University, 15 were still dancing as the marathon, which netted a record $28,000 in donations and pledges for the Four Diamonds Fund for cancer in children, ended last night shortly after 7 p.m.
Among the 15 couples who danced for 48 hours straight, from Friday evening until the marathon's close, was a County couple, R. Scott Bruce and Diane Steward of State College.
First-place winners in the marathon for time spent on the dance floor were the following fraternities and sororities: Alpha Epsilon Pi and Gamma Phi Beta, Triangle, Alpha Gamma Delta and Phi Kappa Tau, Theta Chi, Tau Epsilon Phi, Acacia and Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Chi Rho.
In the fraternity-sorority division, Kappa Delta Rho and Delta Delta Delta were preliminary first-place winners in securing donations and pledges with a total of $5,961. This is Kappa Delta Rho's fourth year as first place winner in the marathon.
Other winners were: 2nd place, Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Gamma Delta. $3,763; 3rd place, Sigma Pi and Alpha Chi Omega, $2,816; 4th place, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa Kappa Gamma, $2,710; 5th place, Delta Gamma and Delta Kappa Phi with $1,830, and 6th place, Phi Kappa Tau and Alpha Gamma Delta with $1,715.
Official winners will be announced Thursday evening after all pledges are submitted.
In the independent division, the Student Assistance Center led with $691 in pledges and donations secured. East Halls Resident Association was second with $233 and the Delts were third with $249.
Although the Delts' pledges and donations exceeded those of East Halls, the Delts' contestants dropped out of the marathon a half hour before its finish so their penalty points bring their total to below that collected by East Halls.
Don Mains, overall chairman of the marathon, said "Although the marathon was sponsored by IFC and 62 couples collected, the marathon's success was due to the people of the Centre County area. It is they who deserve the credit."
In the contest for first place money-getter in the fraternity-sorority division, some fraternities took to the road, collecting for the fund in Harrisburg, York, Mechanicsburg, Altoona and throughout the Centre Region.
Of the six local couples entered, three dropped out of the marathon Saturday evening and two dropped out shortly after midnight Sunday. In spite of problems incurred in the marathon several County contestants indicated they want to dance again next year.
