42nd Annual Theta Chi Open - May 5th

Announcing the 42nd annual Theta Chi Open has been scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, May 5th, 2023.  We return to the Jersey Shore for the first time in 3 years and will be playing once again Avalon Golf Club. Hard to believe when we gathered in May 1980 for our 1st annual at glorious Beckett Golf Club that the tradition carries on 41 years later.

There will be changes made this year to make the event more interesting to all participants. New this year is the following:

  1. Relaunch of the Tachi Cup, a match of the top four players of the "old guys" and the top four of the "young" guys.  Designated captains will choose their team.  The team with the lowest collecitive gross score will receive the Tachi Cup.   Feel free to fill it with beer and drink in a victorious manner.

  2. There will be more closest to the pin competiions this year, 5 total and 1 longest drive.

  3. Also in an effort to include more players in the competition an award will be provided for low net using a handicap system..  Essentially this award will recognize the most improved player.  Handicaps will be announced at a later date.  Even Vlad can win...if he chooses to keep score this year.

Of course the low gross competition will continue and the Theta Chi Open trophy will be awarded to the winning player. Everybody will be gunning for perenial winner Brother Bob Mausser.  Let’s see if someone has the game to do so.

Post round festivities will be held at a shore house located likely in Sea Isle City. Likely start time is 6:00 pm.  Once again Brother Cunningham will have the challenge of finding that location. Old favorite "Local Smoke" will deliver a barbecue fest to the shore house.

Gentlemen.  Greens fees and banquet costs have been finalized. Cost is $74 per golfer payable at the course.  A considerable increase, but that's inflation nowadays. Cost for the banquet is $45 (also an increase) payable at the course.  Also, there will be a $10 golf challenge fee for closest to the pin and long drive contests. 14 have signed up, I'm sure there will be many more.  Enroll today

GI Theta Chi 2017

What GI Theta Chi?

GI Theta Chi is a yearly fundraising effort to support the USO. This year we are organizing a three- day event consisting of Partial Proceeds Night, Letter Writing Night, and the main event featuring Water Balloon Battle Ship and a dollar hot dog cookout. EVERYONE can participate in the first two activities and the main event. In addition to participating in these activities, you and four friends can register a squad ($25) and participate in the water balloon battleship to compete with other squads for points. The squad with the most points will win McClanahan’s Gift Cards.

Why the USO?

For 75 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities, the USO is always by their side.

Water Balloon Battle Ship

DATE: April 9, 2017

MISSION: Compete in a tournament style water balloon game to earn points for your squad.

OBJECTIVE: During a match two squads will face each other and will be separated by a barrier. Each member will stand in place on their respective sides and cannot move. Each squad will be given a chance to launch water balloons over the barrier at the opposing squad. A squad is awarded one point with every hit. After five rounds the winner is determined by which squad has the most points in the match.

As stated above, ALL are welcome to attend this event at Theta Chi Fraternity for music, games, $1 Hot Dogs, and Free Insomnia Cookies. Support the teams in Water Balloon Battleship and help us raise money to support the USO!!!

If you need any additional information please let us know.

GI Theta Chi 2015 - Tug-of-War, Sack Race, and BBQ Benefitting the USO

Come on out for the inaugural GI Theta Chi philanthropy effort by Theta Chi Fraternity at Penn State! This exciting event raises funds for the USO, which provides substantial support for active and retired United States military members. More information can be found at www.uso.org.

To raise funds, we will be having a 5-person Tug-of-War competition (teams of less than 5 will be supplemented with Theta Chi brothers or combined with another small team to reach 10 people), a sack race, and a BBQ. For just $20 per team member, you and your team mates can enter the Tug-of-War tournament in attempts to win the title of "Tug-of-War Champions", will receive a T-shirt, free BBQ, and a chance to participate in the sack race and win the coveted title "Quickest in the Sack"! If you just want the BBQ and do not want to compete, it will be $7.

There is a league for guys only, and a separate league for coed teams. If a group of girls is interested but does not have any guys on their team, we will supplement your team with Theta Chi brothers. The sack race is an individual event, and there will be separate brackets for guys and girls. Note that Greek community members will be able to get community service hours for participating.

So you are probably itching to sign up, huh? Simply email Alex Constable to register your team. Payment will be due 1 week prior to the event. The rain date will be Sunday, April 5th, time TBD.
